What does stem-cell research on animals tell us?
Medical Director, Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
As with most research, often times research starts with animal studies, but we do have to take it with a grain of salt. Frequently in medicine, what we find beneficial in animals doesn't always translate to humans; we're different, we're a different species, we like to think we're more advanced. And so, while we should certainly take great hope and excitement from the results of animal studies, we should also look at it with some cautious optimism, as it proceeds further, and hopefully as it goes on to human trials.
