Keep your messages short, no more than five or six paragraphs per message.

Focus on a single subject in each message; talk about the issue that is giving you the most trouble right now. You’ll have time to get around to all of your issues sooner or later.

Don’t be afraid to talk frankly; your counselor can be trusted to understand what you’re going through.

Try to respond to your counselor’s messages in 48-hours or less. If  too much time elapses between messages, both sides tend to lose track of the conversation, and it becomes less useful.

Take the time to read through your entire conversation every now and then. It will give you a sense of how far you’ve come, and the progress of your relationship.
